Design of Follow-Up Experiments for Improving Model Discrimination and Parameter Estimation

چکیده
One goal of experimentation is to identify which design parameters most significantly influence the mean performance of a system. Another goal is to obtain good parameter estimates for a response model that quantifies how the mean performance depends on influential parameters. Most experimental design techniques focus on one goal at a time. This paper proposes a new entropybased design criterion for follow-up experiments that jointly identifies the important parameters and reduces the variance of parameter estimates. We simplify computations for the normal linear model by identifying an approximation that leads to a closed form solution. The criterion is applied to an example from the experimental design literature, to a known model and to a critical care facility simulation experiment. Application of statistical techniques and artificial neural network to estimate force from sEMG signals
This paper presents an application of design of experiments techniques to determine the optimized parameters of artificial neural network (ANN), which are used to estimate force from Electromyogram (sEMG) signals. The accuracy of ANN model is highly dependent on the network parameters settings. There are plenty of algorithms that are used to obtain the optimal ANN setting. However, to the best ...
متن کاملJoint Criterion for Factor Identification and Parameter Estimation
One goal in simulation experimentation is to identify which input parameters most significantly influence the mean of simulation output. Another goal is to obtain good parameter estimates for a response model that quantifies how the mean output depends on influential input parameters. The majority of experimental design techniques focus on either one goal or the other. This paper uses a design ...

Abstract Storytelling is an indirect method for introducing a framework for education, improving self concept and efficiency, and unifying separate experiences in children and young adults. Therefore, it can affect their health. This study was conducted to examine the effects of the storytelling model of teaching optimism on depression in grades 4 and 5 primary school children, a quasi-experim...
متن کاملCriterion-robust Optimal Designs for Model Discrimination and Parameter Estimation: Multivariate Polynomial Regression Case
Consider the problem of discriminating between two polynomial regression models on the q-cube [−1, 1] , q ≥ 2, and estimating parameters in the models. To find designs which are efficient for both model discrimination and parameter estimation, Zen and Tsai (2002) proposed a multiple-objective optimality criterion for the univariate case. In this work, taking the same Mγ-criterion which uses wei...
متن کاملOn the optimal design of experiments for conceptual and predictive discrimination of hydrologic system models
Experimental design and data collection constitute two main steps of the iterative research cycle (aka the scientific method). To help evaluate competing hypotheses, it is critical to ensure that the experimental design is appropriate and maximizes information retrieval from the system of interest. Scientific hypothesis testing is implemented by comparing plausible model structures (conceptual ...
